01/08/2013In the year 2012 345,000 passengers used Maastricht Aachen Airport and a 75,000 tons of cargo was processed. The passenger total has remained close to the volumes of the year 2011 but mean a discontinuation of the growth achieved in the previous year.

A a result of the first Dutch base opening of Ryanair at Maastricht Aachen airport in December 2012 and the commencement of flights of start up carrier Maastricht Airlines per march 2013, the total number of passenger destinations will increase from 14 to 21 and the expected passenger total for 2013 lies above 500,000.

The processed volume for air cargo was reduced by 18% to 75,0000 tons from the 92,000 tons processed in the year 2011. This reduction is almost fully attributable to the cancellation of import cargo flows from China. In the fields of perishable imports, in particular for Africa and South America as well as imports and exports to the Middle East and Turkey 2012 saw an increase over the 2011 volumes.

For 2013 the expectation is that the cargo volumes will recover slightly but these will not return to their 2011 levels as the current economic conditions will continue to affect global trade.
