Alicante

Alicante, or Alacante as the city is known in Catalan, is also called the "friendliest town in Spain". In the evenings, the local population gathers in El Barrio, the old city centre, where the tourists also congregate. With a mixture of Spanish, English and sign language, people eat and drink together.

The city is situated in a bay with a modern port against a backdrop of mountains and tropical palm trees lining the streets. From the marble-paved boulevard, you can see the historic castles and monasteries in the mountains. They are still in use today and a warm welcome is extended to visitors. The Rambla district is situated in the city centre and is lined by cafés and ice cream stalls. You can also try the distinctive local drink 'horchata' here. Alicante is also well-known for its almonds that grow in this region. Turrón (nougat), made of almonds and honey, originates from this region, but is also popular outside Spain nowadays, and something you really have to try.

If you are looking for something more luxurious, you can go to the more modern part of the city, which is located between the port, Explanada and Calle Alfonso El Sabio.
