Berlin
Berlin is a city of history and culture; at Alexanderplatz, you can find the Fernsehturm, standing at over200 metres tall, with a bar and restaurant providing beautiful views across the city. You can also find the Marienkirche, the Weltzeituhr and the Rotes Rathaus in this square. The Brandenburg Gate, the city's most famous monument, is the city gate of Berlin and the monument to German unification. For years, the Berlin Wall separated East from West; Checkpoint Charlie, on Friederichstrasse, was the checkpoint where people could cross the border. In the Checkpoint Charlie House, you can find a lot of information about, for instance, the attempts to flee from East to West. The main street of East Berlin, Unter den Linden, is situated between the Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz. The street is now the domain of exclusive shops, fine restaurants, souvenir shops and, of course, Currywurst.
Near Unter den Linden lies the most beautiful square in Berlin, the Gendarmenmarkt, with the remnants of the Gedächtniskirche, a peace monument in memory of the Second World War. The Kurfürstendamm is the largest shopping boulevard in Berlin and used to be the centre of West Berlin. A visit to Potsdamer Platz, the centre of trade, is also worthwhile. Several large companies still have their head offices here, the ultramodern high-rise buildings standing out against the other districts in the centre of Berlin. This is also where you can find the Sony Center cinemas, restaurants and trendy places of entertainment. The museum island, with the finest museums, lies in the River Spree. In the surrounding area, the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp is worth a visit. This camp was used by the Nazis as a model camp and nowadays has a very interesting exhibition, both outdoors and in the former barracks.
In short, the city of Berlin is a city of many faces. Whether you stay for a day, a weekend or longer, you will have a great time!
