Liège province (Belgium)
Walking around present day Liège's winding streets, visitors cannot escape the grandeur radiating from the richly decorated facades of age-old churches and residences, squares and gardens. This harks back to Liège's role as capital of an autonomous principality that existed for more than 800 years and, in its heyday, covered a large part of present-day Wallonia as well as parts of both Belgian and Dutch Limburg and the French Ardennes. Liège is Belgium's 4th largest city, located in the French speaking area of the country. The city's proximity to both the Netherlands and Germany has created a cultural melting-pot of a city. If a single day in Liège is not enough, the city has a wide selection of hotels. In the evenings, Liège offers everything from small bars to larger clubs, where people can enjoy themselves well into the small hours. You might also visit nearby Ardennes, a nature park stretching all the way to France, which offers the opportunity of some beautiful walks.
