02-12-2011The number of cargo connections available at Maastricht Aachen Airport will be expanded as per Saturday December 3rd. On this day Europe's largest all cargo airline Cargolux operated it's inaugural flight connecting Maastricht to Equador and Columbia.

In total Cargolux will operate the service from Quito and Bogota on a 4x weekly basis with a Boeing 747-400F in addition to it's flights from Nairobi to Maastricht. Cargolux chose to expand its fresh flower product at MAA due to the high speed and flexibility of the airport's daughter company Maastricht Handling Services to unload, process and release these fresh flowers to waiting refrigerated freight trucks to ferry the products to their final destinations. In addition the service will enable regional exporters to access the rapidly growing Brazilian market.

Sander Heijmans, CEO of Maastricht Aachen Airport and Maastricht Handling Services:

“This growth in operations by our valued partner Cargolux is a very important addition to our portfolio of destinations. This new trade lane connects Maastricht with South America and helps to diversify the airports international profile which already receives daily cargo flights from East Africa, China, Russia, Turkey, Middle East and Central Asia. Resulting from our steadily increasing number of destinations we are able to provide time saving, flexible and cost saving logistical solutions to more and more companies in Southeast-Netherlands, the Meuse Rhine Euregion and greater Western European market. We foresee further expansions in the destination network and will keep working to realize those to reinforce our position in the cargo market”.

The addition of the new Cargolux flights are one of the reasons Maastricht Aachen Airport expects to close 2012 with record freight volume, despite the current economic situation and forecasts. At the airport Maastricht Aachen Airport's daughter company Maastricht Handling Services will expand it's facilities with a 9.000 square meter cargo warehouse in the first quarter of 2012 which will enable a further increase in service levels.
