The Old Town ‘Barri Vell’ in the northern Spanish city of Girona lies on a hill on the right bank of the River Onyar.
In this part of Girona, you can find many beautiful old townhouses and monumental buildings. These include Girona Cathedral, Plaça de la Independència square, the old city walls, and a number of original Arab Baths. The overhanging houses on both sides of the River Onyar are typical for this beautiful city.
Girona is also called ‘the city of four rivers’ and exudes a special atmosphere. The Jewish quarter of El Call is known for its beautiful Agullana Palace, narrow alleyways and picturesque squares. With its boutiques and inviting terraces, La Rambla de la Libertad is perhaps the most pleasant shopping street in Girona. On Tuesday and Saturday mornings the famous ‘Mercado de las Ribes del Ter’ market is set up on the banks of the river.
Girona is only 90 kilometres from Barcelona; a direct train connects the two cities.
