Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands, an island archipelago located south-west of Spain.
Many tourists visit Gran Canaria to enjoy the sunshine, and for good reason. For a sun-filled holiday, this beautiful island, with more than 80 beaches and tourist resorts such as Playa del Inglés, is the place to be in both summer and winter. This alone would almost make you forget what the island additionally has to offer!
Take, for example, the Vegueta district. This is the historical centre of Las Palmas, with its impressive Plaza de Santa Ana, where you can find the Cathedral of Santa Ana opposite the Casas Consistoriales. Behind the cathedral you will discover the Casa de Cólon. This palace from the fifteenth century has a beautiful Gothic entrance that takes you into the Columbus House Museum.
Or why not check out the island’s splendid scenery, spectacular ravines and beautiful seaside and mountain villages? Gran Canaria, like the other Canary Islands, is of volcanic origin. A rental car is a must to discover all of the island’s beautiful sights. Be sure to go off the beaten track and discover palm-filled valleys, a landscape full of cacti and mountains covered with conifers. From lush green valleys to golden sand dunes, it’s all very much worth it!
If you like history and archaeology, you have come to the right place as well. Old times come alive in the island’s museums and at the archaeological sites, but also in the cave dwellings in the cliffs of Barranco de Guayadeque. The inhabitants of this village still live in the authentic cave dwellings, which were carved out in pre-Hispanic times.
There’s so much to see and experience! Dunas de Maspalomas should also be mentioned. It resembles a piece of Sahara desert blown over from the African mainland. And let’s not forget the village of Mogan, whose micro-climate has been recognised by UNESCO as one of the healthiest in the world.
